Title I, Part D of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Title I, Part D of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act, most recently reauthorized as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), offers federal funding to improve the quality of education in facilities for neglected and delinquent youth, promote smooth transitions into and out of institutions, prevent dropout, and provide young people returning from correctional facilities or institutions for neglected and delinquent children and youth with reentry support to ensure their continued education and involvement of their families and communities.

Transition Toolkit 3.0: Meeting the Educational Needs of Youth Exposed to the Juvenile Justice System, NDTAC

The third edition of the NDTAC’s Transition Toolkit brings together strategies, existing practices, and updated resources on transition that build on research and field experience. NDTAC describes the Toolkit as offering “practical information that enables State and local administrators and service providers to provide high-quality transition services for youth moving into, through, and out of education programs within the juvenile justice (JJ) system.”  The Toolkit spotlights promising examples from the field.

Facility Toolkit for Engaging Families in Their Child’s Education at a Juvenile Justice Facility, NDTAC

This toolkit, designed for facility and school administrators, provides tools to promote family involvement in a facility school and encourage families—including those who are reluctant, fearful, or unprepared—to become more involved.  The toolkit also encourages staff—including those who are doubtful, cynical, or unprepared—to persist in their efforts to engage families. The toolkit may also be helpful to other stakeholders including parent advocates, family organizations, and the court.
