Oregon Virtual School District
The ORVSD is a program led by Oregon Department of Education that, in partnership with virtual learning providers throughout the state, provides access to online learning and teaching resources free of charge to the public school teachers of Oregon. The ODE and the Oregon Youth Authority brought the ORVSD to juvenile correctional facilities in 2013, providing valuable career preparation courses and opportunities to develop professional skills. For example, using the ORVSD, youth in secure placements have attended online music schools, set up audio and video projects, and obtained employment at a local radio station. Another class teaches youth computer repurposing the basics of A+ Certification. College and college preparatory classes are also available. The ORVSD program is supported by an OYA policy that permits youth to have email access if the account is used for educational, vocational, or transitional purposes.
