Inter-Agency Transition Planning

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education, the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), and the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) entered into a memorandum of agreement to improve educational outcomes for youth committed to DYRS. The MOA includes an agreement between DYRS and the DCPS to plan for student discharge from DYRS. At least one week prior to the student’s release, DYRS provides DCPS with information about the student’s academic standing, including the number of credits earned, the classes the student is currently enrolled in, and the student’s special education status. DYRS also assists all re-entering youth and their families with completing an enrollment packet provided in advance by DCPS; DYRS is responsible for submitting the completed packet to DCPS no later than the day of discharge. If a student fails to attend school within five days of discharge, DCPS notifies DYRS and initiates its truancy protocol.
